About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 2,340,000 dimes in 1877, a substantial pullback from the 10.42 million 1876-S Centennial-year delivery and a return to the more typical S-mint dime production range of the late 1870s. The coin is a Legend, No Arrows issue under the 2.50-gram weight standard set by the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873. The 2.34-million figure sits well below the parallel 7.7 million Carson City and 7.31 million Philadelphia outputs for the year, which is unusual for the late-1870s S-mint dime run; San Francisco had been the high-volume branch since 1875, and the 1877 step-down reads as a one-year production rebalance rather than the start of any sustained pattern, with 1878-S omitted from the calendar entirely and S-mint dime production not resuming until 1884.

Strike quality on the issue runs generally cleaner than the Carson City output and follows the standard San Francisco pattern of crisp obverses with predictable softness on the wreath ribbon area and the lower drapery folds. Most survivors fall in Very Good through Extremely Fine, where the coin did its working life through the late 1870s and into the Barber decades. About Uncirculated examples are reasonably available, and Mint State pieces exist in workable numbers but turn meaningfully scarcer above MS-63 with original luster. The smaller mintage relative to the surrounding S-mint years gives the 1877-S a slight scarcity profile in higher grades, though absolute date-rarity status does not apply. Authentication starts at the 2.50-gram weight, the 17.9-millimeter reeded edge, and verification of the S mintmark seated inside the wreath. The S mintmark of the period is small and sometimes lightly punched, so direct comparison against documented mintmark photographs remains useful on borderline pieces. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, both certify the issue routinely without separate variety attribution beyond mintmark position.

For collectors, the 1877-S is a comfortable date-and-mint fill in circulated grades and a reasonable Mint State target with patience. Prices track modest S-mint premiums over Philadelphia type pricing through Extremely Fine, with the step-up steepening only at gem MS-65 and above.
