About this coinHistory

Philadelphia delivered 1,100 proof dimes in 1879, a sharp step up from the 800-piece 1878 figure and the start of a stretch of comfortable four-figure proof deliveries that would continue for the remaining 12 years of the series. Specie Resumption took full effect on January 1 of the year, gold and silver coin returned to ordinary circulation alongside paper after almost two decades of suspension, and collector subscription demand recovered correspondingly. The matching business strike fell to 14,000 pieces, the lowest Philadelphia dime mintage of the entire Seated run outside the war-era 1865 and 1866 floors and one of the great date-set scarcities of the decade. The proof program meanwhile ran at one of its higher Reconstruction-era levels, an inversion of the usual relationship between proof and circulation supply.

Strike on the date reads as standard late-1870s polished-die work: deeply mirrored fields, complete denticles around both sides, sharp drapery and hair detail on Liberty, and full wreath leaves on the reverse. Cameo and Deep Cameo PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, designations exist for the date in reasonable counts, with the strong-contrast pieces drawing clear premiums. Authentication rests on the standard structural diagnostics: squared rims perpendicular to the field, watery die-polish lines visible under a 10x loupe (a jeweler's magnifier), complete devices, and the 2.50-gram weight standard set by the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 on a 17.9-millimeter reeded silver planchet. The unusual collector dynamic on the date is that the proof is the more common acquisition: the 1879 business strike runs into four-figure prices in worn grades and five figures in Mint State, while the proof in equivalent PR grade sits well below those circulation-strike levels.

For collectors approaching 1879 as a date-set requirement, the proof is the practical entry point in the mid-grade range. The Cameo coins draw specialists building a complete Cameo Seated proof set; the Brilliant proofs without strong frost concentrate the working market. The Regular rarity badge on this page follows site convention for all proof entries. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design, the 1873 Coinage Act, and the series' proof program, see the Seated Liberty Dime series history.
