About this coinHistory

The 1971-S Silver Type 1 Reverse is the scarce die variety of the inaugural-year silver proof, distinguished by a low-relief Earth on the reverse that matches the corresponding 1971 circulation-strike low-relief reverse rather than the higher-relief proof standard. San Francisco's combined 1971-S Silver proof mintage was 4,265,234 pieces; the Type 1 Reverse Variety accounts for only a small subset, struck early in the proof production run before the Mint shifted to the higher-relief proof reverse hub that became the standard for the balance of the year and for the subsequent silver proof program. The Type 1 reverse Earth reads as a flat, low-relief globe with indistinct continental outlines, where the standard 1971-S Silver proof carries the sharper, three-dimensional Earth that defines the post-Type-1 design.

Authentication of a Type 1 Reverse claim turns on the Earth detail itself. Hold the coin under raking light at five to ten power magnification, and a genuine Type 1 shows a flat, featureless globe with no clear Florida or Caribbean detail and limited continental relief overall. A standard reverse 1971-S Silver proof, by contrast, shows the higher-relief Earth with clearly defined continents and properly proportioned islands. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC both list the variety in their slabs. Cameo, the contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is standard on early die states; deep cameo is the premium subset, and the Type 1 Reverse pulls strongest premiums in deep cameo grades.

The 1971-S Silver Type 1 Reverse is a popular series Variety that trades at a meaningful multiple of the standard 1971-S Silver across all Cameo and Deep Cameo grades. Pricing has held steady across the past two decades, with the gap widest at PR69 Deep Cameo and especially at PR70 Deep Cameo. The variety is the only Type 1 / Type 2 reverse distinction documented across the entire Eisenhower silver proof program, since the Mint standardized on the higher-relief hub from 1972 onward. For the design-change context and the broader proof program history, see the Eisenhower Dollar series history.
