About this coinHistory

The 1973-S Silver continued the 40 percent silver proof program at 1,013,646 pieces, the lowest figure of the 1971-1976 silver proof run and a meaningful step down from the 1972 figure of 1.81 million. The Mint distributed the issue through the dedicated Brown Pack 40% Silver Proof Set, separate from the standard annual proof set that received the clad version. Frank Gasparro's Eisenhower obverse and Apollo-11-derived eagle reverse remained unchanged, struck on the 24.59-gram 40 percent silver planchet that distinguished the silver issue from the clad counterpart at every step from planchet weight through finish.

For collectors, the 1973-S Silver is a Cameo and Deep Cameo proof, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster at PR68 and PR69 Deep Cameo. The 24.59-gram silver planchet picks up contact and toning marks readily, so PR70 Deep Cameo populations are smaller than the raw 1-million mintage suggests, and milky toning is the most common deduction on cracked-out raw examples. Strike quality is consistently sharp on coins from sealed Brown Pack sets; the eagle, moon surface, and Eisenhower's portrait come up cleanly across the run. No major varieties are documented for the 1973-S Silver.

This is a regular-issue proof and the third silver proof in the series. Pricing sits above the 1973-S Clad across all proof grades because the lower mintage and 40 percent silver composition both contribute to a modest premium. Sealed Brown Pack sets remain the standard source. The 1973-S Silver pairs naturally with the 1973-S Silver NIFC Blue Pack Uncirculated as the year's two collector-only silver options, both struck on the same 24.59-gram 40 percent silver planchet. The differential between the two reflects the proof versus business-strike finish rather than any composition difference. For the dual-composition proof program history and the year-by-year silver proof figures, see the Eisenhower Dollar series history.
