About this coinHistory

The 1974-D ran the second-largest output of the year at 45,517,000 pieces, slightly less than the 1972-D series high but well above the 1974 Philadelphia figure. Denver carried the majority of the standard-reverse production again, as had been the case throughout the inaugural period and the 1973 Mint-Set-only year. Frank Gasparro's Eisenhower obverse and the corrected high-relief reverse hub remained the standard, and Denver's dies showed no meaningful variation across the run beyond the routine wear that affects any high-volume modern coinage program.

Strike quality on the 1974-D is consistently better than the same year's Philadelphia work. Denver dies tended to produce cleaner moon-surface texture and a fuller eagle, with high-point softness on Eisenhower's hair appearing only at the latest die states. Most surviving examples grade MS64 to MS66 from broken bags and Mint Set releases, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations thinning at MS67. The 45-million mintage produces a deep certified pool at MS65 and MS66 but the differential to MS67 is meaningful, since contact marks on the 22.68-gram planchet accumulate readily under any bag handling. No major varieties are catalogued.

This is a regular common date and the last standard-reverse D-mint Eisenhower before the 1975-1976 Bicentennial production interrupted the normal cycle. Pricing has held flat for two decades at modest levels, with the 1974-D trading at parity with the 1974 Philadelphia in MS65 and slightly above in MS66 because Denver's striking advantage shows up directly in the certified-pop differential. The 1974-D pairs with the 1974 Philadelphia in date sets, and original 1974 Mint Sets that include both coins remain the most efficient route to matched-grade examples. Raw coins from broken Federal Reserve bags routinely show contact marks heavy enough to cap them in the MS64 range. For the broader run history and the Bicentennial context that follows, see the Eisenhower Dollar series history.
