San Francisco struck 243,567 regular proofs of the 2018 American Innovation Dollar, the inaugural proof for a fourteen-year program authorized by Public Law 115-197. The Washington Patent design is the only Innovation Dollar from 2018; every release after it belongs to the four-per-year state rotation that began in 2019. That structural position gives the 2018-S Proof a permanent role as the series opener, and most collectors building proof sets of the program treat it as the cornerstone purchase.
The proof finish on this issue is standard Cameo, the term for the contrast between deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices created when the Mint pickles the working dies before striking. Justin Kunz's Statue of Liberty obverse and the quill-and-signature reverse from Castro Bock both take frost cleanly because the central elements are bold and centrally placed, and PCGS and NGC, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company, routinely award the Deep Cameo and Ultra Cameo designations to nearly the entire mintage. Hairlines from improper handling are the most common reason a proof drops below PR69 in this series; the soft manganese-brass surfaces show contact marks from any sliding contact during removal from the original Mint capsule. Sealed original Mint packaging is the safest way to acquire a raw example.
The 2018-S Proof was sold individually and as part of the 2018 American Innovation $1 Coin Proof set. PCGS and NGC populations at PR69 Deep Cameo and PR70 Deep Cameo run into the high thousands, so the issue is plentiful at the top of the grading curve and trades at modest premiums over original issue price. For collectors, the natural acquisition path is a certified PR70 Deep Cameo or a sealed original Mint pack rather than a raw loose proof. Background on the program's design rotation and proof formats is in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
