The 2019-D New Jersey dollar is Denver's strike for the third design of the American Innovation series and the first to honor the third state to ratify the Constitution. Denver delivered 476,275 pieces, the smaller of the two 2019 New Jersey circulation mintages by roughly 45,000 coins. The reverse, designed by Emily Damstra and engraved by Joseph Menna, shows Thomas Edison standing in his Menlo Park laboratory holding the carbon-filament incandescent lamp that produced 13.5 hours of continuous light in October 1879. Edison received U.S. Patent 223,898 for the improved lamp on January 27, 1880; the design choice anchors the coin to that specific moment rather than to the broader arc of his 1,000-plus patents.
Denver strikes from this issue typically show good detail in the bulb's filament and on the laboratory equipment in the background, the two design elements most prone to softness on light strikes. The edge lettering, which carries the denomination, year, mintmark, and 13 stars, is consistent with the rest of the early Innovation run. PCGS and NGC, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company, have graded the issue across the Mint State range without major condition pressure below MS67. Examples in MS68 are scarcer than the raw mintage suggests, since none of these coins entered general circulation; distribution was through Mint-direct rolls and bags, and most survivors carry original Mint surfaces.
The 2019-D is a regular date for set builders rather than a key. Roll-quantity examples remain available at modest premiums over face value, and certified pieces in MS66 and MS67 trade in the low double digits. Where the date earns a second look is in the registry context, where the population in MS68 is thin enough to drive a meaningful premium for a fully struck Edison reverse. Raw is the right call for casual collectors and year-set builders; certified MS68 makes sense only for registry buyers chasing a complete Innovation set. The program's structure and rotation are covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
