About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 521,175 New Jersey dollars in 2019, the larger circulation mintage for the third state design in the American Innovation program. The reverse honors Thomas Edison's October 1879 carbon-filament incandescent lamp, the device that ran for 13.5 hours and made electric lighting commercially viable; Edison and his Menlo Park team would go on to file more than 1,000 patents from the New Jersey laboratory complex that earned the nickname "the invention factory." The coin places Edison in that workspace holding the bulb, which gives the design a workshop-realism rare on circulating U.S. coinage and ties New Jersey's contribution to a single, identifiable laboratory bench.

For Philadelphia strikes, the diagnostic worth checking is the filament inside the glass envelope: weak strikes flatten the loop into a single line, while a strong strike shows the carbonized hairpin curve. The figure of Edison and the laboratory background remain the harder-to-strike portion of the die, and lower Mint State examples often show softness in his coat and in the shelving behind him. Edge lettering is typical for the early Innovation series, with denomination, year, mintmark, and 13 stars in the standard rotation. None of the Philadelphia New Jersey strikes entered general circulation; the Mint distributed them through 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags, so survivors are nearly all in Mint State.

The 2019-P is a regular date for the series and trades at modest premiums over face in roll quantities. PCGS and NGC, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company, have certified the issue through MS67 in healthy numbers; MS68 populations are thinner and drive a meaningful price step for registry collectors. Year-set and series-set builders need both 2019 New Jersey circulation strikes for completion, with the Philadelphia issue typically the easier of the two to source raw at original-roll quality. The program's authorizing legislation and design rotation are covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
