About this coinHistory

Denver's Massachusetts dollar is the lowest of the two 2020 business strikes for the design at 436,425 coins, struck for the numismatic distribution program rather than circulation and shipped in 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags. Massachusetts ratified the Constitution on February 6, 1788 as the sixth state, fixing the slot for the design in the program's statehood-order release schedule. The honoree is Alexander Graham Bell, who filed his telephone patent on February 14, 1876 and made the first intelligible call ("Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you") in Boston the following month. Bell publicly demonstrated the device at Philadelphia's Centennial Exhibition that summer, but the underlying research, including his work on hearing and speech for the deaf at the Boston School for Deaf Mutes, was Massachusetts work.

Justin Kunz's Statue of Liberty obverse, with relief modeling by Phebe Hemphill, carries across the program. The reverse, designed by Christina Hess and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, shows a hand holding an early telephone receiver with sound waves radiating from the earpiece, an inscription-led design that lets the device do the storytelling without portrait imagery. Denver strikes typically show clean detail in the receiver cord, the hand modeling, and the radiating-wave field; weaker pieces struck late in a die's life can show softness in the cord wrapping. The edge inscription carries the year, mintmark D, and E PLURIBUS UNUM in incused lettering rather than the raised border typical of pre-2000 dollar coinage.

For collectors, the 2020-D Massachusetts is a registry play rather than an absolute scarcity. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, certify the issue routinely through the upper Mint State range, with condition rarity at MS68 and higher driving whatever price separation the coin achieves over face value. Year-set and series-set builders need it to anchor the 2020 Massachusetts slate. Raw rolls remain available at modest premiums and original Mint wrap with date-of-issue documentation holds a small edge over generic rolls. Recommended raw for casual collectors, certified MS68 or finer for registry buyers. Background on the program's structure is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
