About this coinHistory

Philadelphia's 2020 Massachusetts dollar is the higher of the two business strikes for the design at 436,750 coins, with Denver's release at 436,425 trailing it by roughly three hundred pieces. Both figures are tightly clustered, reflecting the Mint's calibrated distribution for a program that ships through numismatic rolls and bags rather than into general commerce. Massachusetts entered the Union as the sixth state on February 6, 1788, fixing the design's slot in the statehood-order release schedule. The honoree is Alexander Graham Bell, whose telephone patent filing on February 14, 1876 was followed weeks later by the first intelligible voice transmission, made in Boston with Bell's assistant Thomas Watson on the receiving end of the wire.

The reverse, designed by Christina Hess and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, shows a hand holding an early telephone receiver with sound waves radiating outward, paired with the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "$1." The device shown is a plausible representation of an early Bell-era receiver rather than a literal portrait of the patent specimen now held by the Smithsonian. Justin Kunz's Statue of Liberty obverse continues unchanged across the program, sculpted in relief by Phebe Hemphill. Philadelphia strikes typically show slightly different die-state characteristics from the Denver counterpart, with the receiver cord and hand modeling registering cleanly on early-die examples and showing modest softening on later pulls. The edge incused inscription reads year, mintmark P, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

The collecting case for 2020-P Massachusetts is set-completion plus condition rarity. PCGS and NGC certify the issue through the upper Mint State range; the population thins out at MS68 and falls off sharply at MS69, where the coin becomes a registry-play rather than a casual purchase. Most surviving examples are in original Mint packaging because the design saw no commercial release. Year-set and series-set builders need both the P and D for any complete 2020 slate, and original 25-coin rolls with the U.S. Mint label hold a small premium over generic-bag rolls. The classification on this site is set to Regular. Background on the program is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
