San Francisco struck 77,180 examples of the 2022-S Rhode Island Proof, the lower-mintage of the two San Francisco strike formats for the design and the figure that ties to the 2022 American Innovation Proof Set production run. The reverse, by Dennis Friel and Phebe Hemphill, depicts Nathanael Herreshoff's 1903 Cup defender Reliance under full canvas, framed by a coiled rope. On a proof, the strike geometry shows what the design was actually drawn for: frosted, deeply textured sails set against the mirrored-field water, with the rigging lines crisp enough to read individually under modest magnification. The contrast between frosted devices and mirrored fields is what graders call Cameo, with the deepest contrast certified as Deep Cameo by PCGS or Ultra Cameo by NGC.
Reliance is worth knowing as a vessel because it explains why the Mint chose this particular yacht. The boat measured 143 feet from bowsprit tip to boom end, carried 16,160 square feet of sail on a single 196-foot mast, and was built almost entirely for one season's racing: she defended the Cup three to nothing against Shamrock III in September 1903 and was scrapped within months. Herreshoff designed her at the Bristol yard with hollow steel spars, an aluminum-alloy topside, and a Tobin-bronze plated bottom, all to push displacement down and sail area up beyond what any earlier defender had attempted. The proof finish does justice to the visual drama, since the design's principal pictorial mass is sail, and frosted sails against mirrored sea is precisely the contrast a proof strike was made to render.
For Innovation Dollar collectors, the 2022-S Proof is the standard San Francisco proof for the year and was sold by the Mint in single-coin packaging and as part of the four-coin 2022 American Innovation Proof Set. Original Mint packaging is the cheapest acquisition path; certified Cameo and Deep Cameo examples in PR69 and PR70 are common in TPG holders, with PR70 Deep Cameo the practical ceiling. Survival of original-packaging coins from the 77,180 mintage is essentially total. For broader context on the program's design rotation, see the American Innovation Dollar series history.
