The 2023-P Louisiana Innovation Dollar is the Philadelphia counterpart to the Denver strike of the Higgins Boat design, released April 10, 2023 in 444,625 pieces and sold direct from the Mint as rolls and bags rather than placed into general circulation. The reverse honors Andrew Higgins's WWII LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel), the plywood-and-steel landing boat his Higgins Industries built in New Orleans by the tens of thousands. The composition shows the boat with its bow ramp dropped on a beach, the moment troops would have stormed off in an opposed landing. Inscriptions read THE HIGGINS BOAT, LOUISIANA, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Louisiana's slot comes from its April 30, 1812 admission as the eighteenth state. Reverse design credit goes to U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Dennis Friel; sculpting to Medallic Artist John P. McGraw.
Philadelphia strikes from Innovation Dollar dies tend to show slightly fuller central detail than Denver counterparts, and the pattern holds here. The diagnostic to check is the bow ramp, where the textured tread surface and the welded reinforcement bars need to read as discrete elements rather than a continuous mass; a mushy ramp face is the first sign of a late die state. Open field around the bow and stern makes ambient toning streaks especially conspicuous on raw coins outside their original Mint capsule. The lettered edge carries the year, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, and edge legibility is the secondary grading checkpoint after the hull profile. The 444,625-piece Philadelphia total runs about thirty thousand pieces ahead of Denver, narrower than several other 2022 and 2023 splits.
The 2023-P holds the regular classification under the program's standing pattern. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC have certified a small fraction of the mintage, so even at MS67 the coin remains more available than its raw population suggests because original rolls keep returning fresh material when an upgrade hunter cracks a tube. Acquisition is straightforward at low single digits for a BU example, with the modest premium over face limited by the fact that most set builders buy the P and D together from the Mint's two-coin set. The WWII-history angle pulls cross-collector demand from Normandy and amphibious-warfare specialists outside the modern dollar program.
