Denver struck the 2026 California American Innovation Dollar as the third of four state designs released for 2026 and the thirty-first state honored in the program's ratification-order rollout, reflecting California's admission to the Union on September 9, 1850. The reverse, designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Elana Hagler and sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill, depicts a young Steve Jobs seated in front of a northern California landscape of oak-covered rolling hills, with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CALIFORNIA, STEVE JOBS, and MAKE SOMETHING WONDERFUL. The closing line is itself a Jobs quotation, later used as the title of the 2023 anthology of his correspondence and addresses curated by his archivist Leslie Berlin. The U.S. Mint unveiled all four 2026 designs on October 15, 2025.
The Denver issue ships in 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags through the U.S. Mint catalog, with no general circulation release. Almost every surviving 2026-D will go straight from a Mint roll to a collector's holder, so the practical grade range starts at MS65 or MS66 and runs upward; circulated examples will be genuinely scarce regardless of where the final mintage settles. The strike characteristic worth watching is the Jobs portrait itself: the high-relief facial detail, the round eyeglasses, and the soft transition into the oak-hill background give weak strikes nowhere to hide. Look for full definition at the temple, the bridge of the nose, and the foliage line behind the figure. The 2026 obverse also carries a one-year Liberty Bell privy mark with the inscription 250, marking the U.S. Semiquincentennial alongside the standard stylized gear.
For set builders, the 2026-D mintage has not yet been reported and will be published with the annual production report after the close of calendar 2026. Until that figure lands, collecting profile is governed by product timing rather than scarcity: the badge stays Regular, original Mint rolls are the cheapest entry point, and certified MS68 through the major grading services is the practical ceiling. Whether the Jobs design draws crossover demand from Apple-history collectors outside the numismatic community is the most interesting open question on this issue.
