About this coinHistory

The 1934-D, at 1,569,500 pieces, marked Denver's return to Peace Dollar production after a seven-year break and ran the largest output of the 1934 three-mint year. The Gold Reserve Act of 1934 and related silver legislation had required Treasury to resume dollar-coin production despite the absence of meaningful commercial demand, and Denver's share of the 1934 order exceeded both Philadelphia (954,057) and San Francisco (1,011,000) for the year. Anthony de Francisci's Low Relief design carried through to Denver unchanged after the seven-year gap. Two Van Allen-Mallis doubled-die obverse varieties exist for the 1934-D, with the Large D Mintmark and Small D Mintmark distinction further dividing the year's Denver output.

Strike quality on the 1934-D follows the established Denver pattern of slightly softer central detail than the matched Philadelphia issue, though the lower mintage produced fewer late-state pieces than the earlier high-volume Denver dates. Liberty's hair above the ear and the eagle's breast feathers tend toward weak on coins from later die states. Most surviving examples grade MS62 to MS64 from broken Treasury bag releases, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations clustering at MS63 and MS64. MS65 examples are available and trade at modest premiums; MS66 is condition-scarce across the certified pool. The Large D and Small D mintmark distinction commands a small premium for the scarcer variant in upper-Mint-State grades.

The 1934-D is a regular common date by mintage classification and an inexpensive D-mint pickup at the MS64 level. Pricing has held flat for two decades, with the Large D / Small D mintmark variants adding modest variety-level interest for collectors building a complete D-mint Peace Dollar set. The 1934-D is the largest of the four D-mint Peace Dollar mintages outside the early 1922-D and 1923-D issues, and the deep certified pool at MS63 and MS64 makes it the most accessible mid-grade Denver pickup in the post-hiatus section. For the Depression-era hiatus and the 1934 resumption context, see the Peace Dollar series history.
