About this coinHistory

The 1934-S, at 1,011,000 pieces, is the true gem-grade key of the Peace Dollar series and the issue that separates serious collectors from casual date-set builders. The mintage figure sits between the Philadelphia (954,057) and Denver (1,569,500) outputs for the year, but circulation losses and the typical San Francisco strike issues combine to make the 1934-S a meaningful condition rarity above MS64. The Gold Reserve Act of 1934 had required Treasury to resume dollar-coin production despite no commercial demand, and the 1934-S is the final pre-1935 San Francisco issue under that program. Anthony de Francisci's Low Relief design carried through unchanged.

Strike quality on the 1934-S follows the established San Francisco pattern at its worst. Liberty's hair above the ear is consistently mushy, the eagle's breast feathers are nearly always weak, and even Mint State examples from sealed bags rarely show the sharp central detail that defines a true gem strike. Fewer than 5 percent of the original mintage is estimated to survive across all grades, with most circulating heavily in western states before silver-recall pressures pulled survivors into collector hands. Most surviving examples grade VF to MS62, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations clustering at MS62 and MS63. MS65 examples are condition-rare with only seven coins certified at MS66 or higher, and an MS66+ example realized $79,313 at auction in December 2019.

The 1934-S is a Semi-Key issue by mintage classification but an effective Key Date at gem grade, with the differential between MS64 and MS65 one of the steepest in the series. Pricing has held strong for decades at the high end and reflects the cumulative effect of strike issues, circulation losses, and thin certified populations. The 1934-S anchors the back half of the Peace Dollar series alongside the 1928 Philadelphia and 1921 High Relief. For the broader S-mint strike-quality pattern and the 1934 resumption context, see the Peace Dollar series history.
