About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,965,989 proof John Adams dollars in 2007, distributed through the year's clad and silver Proof Sets and the four-coin Presidential Dollar Proof Set rather than sold individually. The S mintmark sits on the edge along with the date and motto inscriptions, applied as a separate pressing step on the same custom equipment used for the circulation issue. Joel Iskowitz designed the obverse and Charles L. Vickers sculpted it; Don Everhart handled the Statue of Liberty reverse. Proof production used polished planchets and frosted devices to give the standard contrast collectors expect, and survival in original packaging is high enough that the coin reaches the market mostly in original government holders or recently broken-out submissions to grading services.

What collectors actually look for is Deep Cameo contrast, which is the strong frosted-device-against-mirrored-field effect that earns the DCAM designation at PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or the Ultra Cameo equivalent at NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company. Most 2007-S Adams proofs grade Proof 69 Deep Cameo when submitted, and Proof 70 Deep Cameo population, while not enormous, is healthy enough that the perfect-grade premium has stayed modest. Watch for hairline scratches from set extraction and small carbon spots that sometimes develop on the manganese-brass surface; both knock points off otherwise clean examples. The proof edge lettering should always be present and crisp on these coins, since the proof process is more controlled than the circulation pressing that produced the year's Plain Edge errors on Washington and the other 2007 designs.

For Presidential set builders the 2007-S Adams proof is a routine purchase, available in original Proof Sets at modest premium over face or as a certified Proof 69 Deep Cameo single for a few dollars more. Sustained demand depends on whether the buyer is assembling a Presidential proof run, a complete proof type set, or working a registry set targeting Proof 70 Deep Cameo, where the price differential is narrow but persistent. The coin itself is not scarce; what is scarce is fully spot-free surfaces in the highest grade, and that is where collectors with patience tend to find value.
