About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,965,989 proof Thomas Jefferson dollars in 2007 for inclusion in the 14-coin Proof Set and the 4-coin Presidential Dollar Proof Set issued that year. Jefferson was the third proof of four sold together, alongside Washington, John Adams, and Madison, packaged as a launch-year subset of the new Presidential $1 program. Joseph Menna's obverse portrait, "THOMAS JEFFERSON / 3RD PRESIDENT / 1801-1809," was rendered in the deeper relief and sharper field separation that proof dies allow; Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse received the same treatment. The S mintmark sits on the lettered edge alongside the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, applied in the standard third strike step.

Proof Presidential dollars from 2007 came out of the facility with strong Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, on essentially every example. Deep Cameo, the sharper grade of that contrast where the frost reads as completely opaque, is the default rather than a premium designation for this issue, so Cameo without the Deep modifier is itself a slight negative for the date. Strike is uniformly full; the analytical grading question is field cleanliness and the absence of hairlines from improper handling out of the original lens. Edge lettering on proofs is fully impressed and does not yield Plain Edge varieties; the Plain Edge phenomenon was a circulation-strike issue tied to the high-volume edge press, not the slower proof process.

The 2007-S Jefferson Proof is a common-date proof that trades as a year-set or design-set component rather than as a standalone target. Original packaging matters: the four-coin Presidential Proof Set lens is the standard source, and most coins on the secondary market are either still housed in those lenses or in PR69 Deep Cameo certified holders. PR70 Deep Cameo examples carry a real premium because the population caps below the date's apparent abundance, but the entire pricing band stays modest. For the broader trajectory of the proof program, including the lower-mintage 2012-2020 NIFC era, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
