About this coinHistory

Denver struck 60,230,000 James Monroe dollars in 2008, slightly fewer than the Philadelphia run of 64,260,000 and continuing the gradual decline from 2007's first-year output. Monroe was the fifth president and the first issue of 2008, released February 14, with the rest of the year's quartet (John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren) following at roughly quarterly intervals. The obverse portrait by Joseph Menna and the Statue of Liberty reverse by Don Everhart appeared in their first year of use here, with the date, mintmark, IN GOD WE TRUST, and E PLURIBUS UNUM struck on the edge in a separate third pressing. By 2008 the Mint had refined the edge-lettering process enough that the spectacular plain-edge "Godless dollar" errors of 2007 had become rare on Monroe.

For collectors, the 2008-D is mostly an exercise in finding clean, problem-free uncirculated examples. The standard issues to check on Mint-bag pulls are the typical Presidential Dollar cluster: roller marks across the obverse fields, scratches and small rim nicks from bag handling, and the soft yellow toning that develops on manganese-brass alloy when stored without proper protection. Strike is generally sharper at Denver than the typical Philadelphia coin of the same year, with crisper detail in Monroe's hair and the lower drapery of the Statue of Liberty. Edge lettering orientation is random and carries no premium either way. Doubled-edge lettering exists on a small percentage of coins and is the only edge variety that draws consistent collector interest.

This is a regular-issue date with no key-status markers, and almost all collector activity centers on uncirculated rolls and bags from original Mint distribution. Certified examples in MS66 are abundant, MS67 still well-represented, and MS68 grades become legitimately scarce in PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, population reports. The realistic acquisition path is an original roll for a few dollars over face value or a low-population MS68 slab for a registry set. For background on the four-presidents-per-year format, the edge-lettering pressing system, and the 2012 transition to Not Intended For Circulation production, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
