About this coinHistory

Denver struck the Martin Van Buren dollar as the fourth and final 2008 release, issued November 13 to close out the second year of the Presidential series. The 50,960,000-piece Denver mintage was the smallest of any 2008 circulation issue from either mint, capping a year in which Federal Reserve orders for dollar coins fell well below 2007 levels as banks sat on accumulated inventory from the Washington-through-Madison launches. Joel Iskowitz designed the obverse portrait of the eighth president and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it; Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse continued from the series opener, and the date, mintmark, mottoes, and E PLURIBUS UNUM remained on the incused edge rather than either face.

Strike quality on the Denver Van Buren is generally crisp through the central portrait, with the coiled hair and neck detail well rendered on most early-die examples; weakness shows up later in the die life along the upper hair and the torch flame on the reverse. The edge-lettering misfires that produced famous Plain Edge varieties on the 2007 issues had largely been corrected by the time Van Buren went to press, so genuine missing-edge examples for 2008 are scarcer than for 2007 and command real money when authenticated, but they are also far more often faked through post-mint tooling. Confirmation through PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC is the only safe path for any apparent edge error.

The 2008-D Van Buren is a common date in circulated and lower Mint State grades, but its lower 2008 mintage gives it modestly more legs at the registry-set top end than the Denver Jackson, Adams, or Monroe issues. Mint State 67 examples remain affordable; Mint State 68 carries the usual manganese-brass premium driven by surface scarcity rather than absolute rarity. Mint set examples and original rolls are the standard acquisition path; raw cherry-picking for upper-end Mint State pieces still works on this date.
