About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,083,940 James Monroe proofs in 2008, distributed through that year's annual Proof Set, Silver Proof Set, and the four-coin Presidential Dollar Proof Set. The mintage was off about 14 percent from the 2007 Washington proof figure and reflected the typical second-year cooling in collector subscriptions, a pattern that continued for the rest of the program. Monroe was the first proof of 2008 to be released and used the same Joseph Menna obverse and Don Everhart Statue of Liberty reverse as the circulation strikes from Philadelphia and Denver, but with mirrored fields and frosted devices rather than the satin business-strike finish. The S mintmark and edge legend were applied during the same separate third pressing used on the circulation issues, and proof edge alignment is more controlled than on bagged business strikes.

Almost every certified example earns the Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo designation, the strongest contrast between mirror fields and frosted relief. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, has graded the bulk of submissions PR69 Deep Cameo, with PR70 Deep Cameo examples available without much hunting. The most common condition issues on raw 2008-S proofs are minor hairlines from improper handling outside the original capsule and the shallow milky residue that sometimes develops on manganese-brass proof surfaces over time. Look at the Monroe portrait field and the lower step area of the Statue of Liberty under angled light when grading raw examples; light cabinet friction or a single hairline can drop the coin a full grade.

This is a routine modern proof rather than a rarity, and the badge sits at Regular Issue. Acquisition is straightforward: original 2008 Proof Sets and the four-coin Presidential Proof Set still trade close to issue price, and certified PR70 Deep Cameo singles are inexpensive given the population. Set-completion collectors building a full forty-coin proof run typically buy intact annual sets rather than chasing singles. For the edge-lettering process, the four-per-year design rotation, and the 2012 transition that converted the circulation issues to Not Intended For Circulation status, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
