About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,083,940 proof John Quincy Adams dollars in 2008, the second of the year's four proof releases and a figure consistent with the rest of the 2008 proof Presidential Dollars. The proof was distributed through the United States Mint's annual Proof Set and Presidential Dollar Proof Set, never released individually. Don Everhart designed the obverse portrait, with the "JOHN QUINCY ADAMS / 6TH PRESIDENT / 1825-1829" legend, while his Statue of Liberty reverse appears on every issue in the program. The lettered edge carries the date, S mintmark, IN GOD WE TRUST, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Adams was the diplomat who negotiated the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812 and shaped the Monroe Doctrine, then served a single contentious term as president before returning to the House for seventeen more years.

The mirror finish on the manganese-brass planchet is the immediate visual difference from the circulation strikes, with deep reflective fields contrasting against frosted devices on Adams's portrait and the Statue of Liberty figure. Cameo, the term for that frost-on-mirror contrast, is standard on these proofs, and Deep Cameo, the strongest tier of frosted contrast, is common given the careful San Francisco preparation. The yellow alloy holds its proof brilliance better than the circulation finish since the Mint packaging keeps oxygen and humidity off the surfaces, but spotting does occur on examples removed from packaging. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, certifies the bulk of submissions at PR69 Deep Cameo.

Population pressure runs heaviest at PR69 Deep Cameo, and the registry-grade PR70 examples are where the only meaningful premium lives on this issue. The practical purchase is an intact 2008 Proof Set or Presidential Proof Set, both of which still surface at modest premiums over face. Cracking out a high-grade proof to chase a single-coin slab rarely pays back unless the example is a clean PR70 candidate. The proof Presidential Dollar set as a whole has not appreciated dramatically, but the 2008 issues remain the cleanest entry point for set builders working backward from later, lower-mintage years.
