San Francisco struck 2,809,452 proofs of the Polk dollar in 2009, the third proof of the year and the eleventh in the Presidential proof series. The figure dropped roughly nine percent from the 2008 proof level (about 3.08 million per design) and reflects the steady contraction in collector-set demand visible across the entire 2009 numismatic calendar. Distribution ran through the 2009 United States Mint Proof Set, the 2009 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, and a handful of related collector products; no proof Presidential dollars were sold individually outside those packages. Susan Gamble drew the obverse portrait of the eleventh president, sculpted by Charles Vickers, with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse. The S mintmark, the date, and the mottoes are incused on the edge rather than struck on either face, the same edge-lettering process used on the circulation strikes from Philadelphia and Denver.
The 2009-S Polk proof shows the deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices that distinguish a modern proof from a circulation strike, with the manganese-brass alloy producing a noticeably warmer cameo contrast than the silver and clad proofs of the same year's set. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is essentially universal on this issue, and Deep Cameo (DCAM) examples dominate the certified population. The handling concern for raw buyers is hairlines and slide marks from removal from the original lens packaging; coins pulled from broken-up sets often show light cleaning attempts to remove fingerprints from the brass surface that ended up doing more harm than the print itself.
This proof is a common collector issue available in original Mint packaging at modest premiums over face. Certified Proof 69 Deep Cameo examples are inexpensive; Proof 70 Deep Cameo carries a meaningful step in price driven by registry demand rather than absolute scarcity. The standard acquisition path is the original 2009 Proof Set, which delivers the Polk alongside the Harrison, Tyler, and Taylor proofs and is generally cheaper per coin than buying any of the four certified individually.
