About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 2,809,452 proofs of the William Henry Harrison dollar in 2009, the ninth design of the Presidential series and the first proof issue of the new program year. The proof was distributed through the 2009 United States Mint Proof Set, the 2009 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, and a small number of related collector products; no Presidential proof dollars were sold individually outside those packages. Joseph Menna designed and sculpted the obverse portrait of the ninth president, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse and the same incused edge inscription used on circulation strikes. The S mintmark sits on the edge rather than on either face, the same edge-lettering process applied to the program's circulation issues.

The 2009-S Harrison proof shows the deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices that distinguish a modern proof from a circulation strike, with the manganese-brass alloy producing a noticeably warmer cameo contrast than silver or copper-nickel proofs of the same era. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is essentially universal on this issue, and Deep Cameo (DCAM) examples dominate the certified population. The handling concern for buyers is hairlines and slide marks from removal from the original lens packaging; raw examples broken out of original sets often show light cleaning attempts to remove fingerprints from the brass surface, which usually do more damage than the print itself. Original sealed Mint capsules remain the safest acquisition path.

This proof is a common collector issue available in original Mint packaging at modest premiums over face. Certified Proof 69 Deep Cameo examples are inexpensive; Proof 70 Deep Cameo carries a meaningful step in price driven by registry demand rather than absolute scarcity. The standard acquisition path is the original 2009 Proof Set or Presidential Dollar Proof Set, which delivers the Harrison alongside the Polk, Tyler, and Taylor proofs.
