About this coinHistory

San Francisco produced 1,972,863 Andrew Johnson proof dollars in 2011, packaged in the four-coin Presidential Dollar Proof Set alongside Grant, Hayes, and Garfield, and also distributed inside the larger fourteen-coin annual Proof Set. The 1.97 million figure is the lowest four-coin Presidential Dollar Proof Set total of the entire program through 2011, down from 2,224,613 the prior year and roughly 30 percent below the 2008 high of 3,083,940. The decline tracked broader proof-set softening across the Mint's collector lineup that year, and 2011 became the trough year for Presidential Dollar proof production before the 2012 NIFC transition reset the program's collector economics.

Strike quality on the 2011-S issue is exemplary. The proof process at San Francisco involves multiple polished-die strikes on selected planchets, and the manganese-brass clad composition takes the laser-frosted devices and mirrored fields cleanly. Look for crisp separation between the frosted portrait of Andrew Johnson and the deep mirror behind the legend, with the lettering "ANDREW JOHNSON" and "17TH PRESIDENT" sharp at the rims. On the reverse, Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty should show distinct frosting on the torch, the crown points, and the drapery, with the mirror field running uninterrupted to the rim. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, designates strong cameo examples Cameo or Deep Cameo (the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices), and the great majority of 2011-S Andrew Johnson proofs grade PR69 or PR70 Deep Cameo at both major grading services.

This proof is a common date and trades modestly above issue price as a single, more meaningfully as part of the original four-coin set or the complete annual Proof Set. The collecting case is structural rather than rarity-driven: 2011 is the lowest-production Presidential Dollar proof year of the circulation-era program, and the 2007-2011 four-coin proof sets sit together as a discrete sub-collection bracketed by the 2012 NIFC transition. PR70 Deep Cameo populations remain manageable enough that Registry Set collectors will pay a real multiple over PR69, and the issue is recommended in original Mint packaging or in a graded slab rather than loose. For series context, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
