San Francisco struck 1,972,863 proof Rutherford B. Hayes dollars in 2011, distributed through the four-coin 2011 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, the Annual Proof Set, and the Premier Silver Proof Set rather than as individual coins. The figure is roughly 11 percent below the 2010 proof level (2,224,613) and continues the steady contraction of proof-set sales as the program aged. The proof figure is shared across all four 2011 designs, since the four-coin set produced a single uniform run for each. Hayes held the office from 1877 to 1881, his term opening with the Compromise of 1877 that resolved the disputed 1876 election and closing with the withdrawal of federal troops from the last Reconstruction-era southern statehouses. Don Everhart designed and sculpted both the obverse portrait and the Statue of Liberty reverse.
The S mintmark sits on the edge alongside the date and the legends E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, applied in a separate edge-press strike after the obverse and reverse dies impressed the faces. Polished planchets and multiple strikes from frosted dies produce the deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices that define the proof finish. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted raised devices, comes standard on 2011 proofs, and Deep Cameo (DCAM at PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or Ultra Cameo at NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company) is the routine designation rather than a premium tier. Look closely at the high points of Hayes's beard and Liberty's torch flame for the slight haze or fingerprint disturbance that separates a Proof 69 from a Proof 70.
The 2011-S Hayes proof is a common, inexpensive issue in PR69 DCAM and a moderate condition rarity in PR70 DCAM, where the population thins relative to the underlying mintage but still measures in the low thousands across both major grading services. Most collectors fill the slot through proof-set break-ups at modest premiums above face value rather than slabbed singles. The 2011 proof figure marks the lowest four-coin Presidential Proof Set total to that point in the program. For broader program context, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
