About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 6,160,000 Warren G. Harding dollars in 2014, the highest Philadelphia mintage of the 2014 quartet and roughly 1.6 times the Denver figure for the same design. The coin opened the program year on February 6, 2014, the first of four 2014 issues in strict presidential succession, and was distributed exclusively through Mint-product channels under the Not Intended For Circulation policy in force since December 13, 2011. The P mintmark sits on the edge alongside the date and the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, applied as a third strike after the obverse and reverse press. Michael Gaudioso designed and sculpted the obverse portrait of the 29th president; Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse appears on every business-strike Presidential Dollar.

Strike quality on the 2014-P Harding is generally clean, with the heaviest production among the four 2014 Philadelphia designs producing a range of die states across the run. First softening typically appears on the high points of Harding's hair and on Liberty's torch flame, and rim definition holds well at the lettering perimeter. Edge-error collecting on Presidential Dollars centers on that third lettering strike: missing-edge, doubled-edge, and weak-edge pieces all surface in original 2014 rolls, though at lower verified rates than the 2007 Washington plain-edge variety. A genuine missing-edge 2014-P slabbed by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, commands a meaningful premium over a standard satin-finish piece; raw claims need careful inspection because the lettering can wear off in handling without indicating a true Mint error.

For collectors, the 2014-P Harding is the highest-mintage member of the 2014 NIFC year and the easiest of the four to source in original Mint packaging. Population data shows broad MS66 and MS67 supply from satin-finish rolls, and an inexpensive certified MS67 is the realistic registry-set choice. Premium pricing tracks rolls of unusual provenance more than individual graded coins; an original 25-coin Mint-wrapped roll trades only marginally above face value. The strongest collecting argument for this date sits in series context as the third NIFC year and the lead 2014 design. For the December 2011 NIFC cutover and the wider distribution shift, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
