About this coinHistory

Denver struck 3,500,000 Dwight D. Eisenhower dollars in 2015, the second design of the year and the lowest Denver output of the four 2015 presidents. The release date was April 13, 2015, behind Harry S. Truman on February 5 and ahead of John F. Kennedy on June 18 and Lyndon B. Johnson on August 18. The 3.5 million figure trails the year's three other Denver issues (Truman 4.9M, Kennedy 5.18M, Johnson 4.06M) and continues the modest collector-only print runs the program settled into after the January 2012 Not Intended For Circulation cutover. Michael Gaudioso engraved the obverse portrait of the 34th president, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse used across every Presidential Dollar business strike and proof.

Strike quality on the 2015-D Eisenhower benefits from the smaller production run and fresh dies; the high points of the temple, the ear, and the inscription "34TH PRESIDENT" come up sharp on early-state strikes, and the reverse torch flame holds detail that softens on the high-mintage 2007 through 2011 issues. Watch the alloy: manganese-brass tones aggressively to honey, olive, or rose within a year or two of striking, and bright lemon-yellow surfaces on a coin a decade after issue almost always indicate cleaning or dipping. Roll-handling marks dominate the grade ceiling at MS66 and MS67, and contact marks across Eisenhower's broad cheek and bare scalp are the typical 70-versus-69 question.

The 2015-D Eisenhower sold to collectors only, packaged in 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, and the annual Mint Set. Eisenhower had a previous run on the dollar coin from 1971 to 1978 (the large-format copper-nickel piece honoring his death and the Apollo 11 lunar mission), so the 2015 issue gave him a second turn at the denomination, this time on the smaller manganese-brass planchet shared by every Presidential Dollar. Original Mint-wrapped rolls and certified MS67 examples remain the standard acquisition paths for year-set and NIFC-era subset builders, and the date trades at modest premiums over face value in slabs. For program-wide context on the NIFC cutover and the four-per-year release pattern, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
