Denver struck 3,500,000 Lyndon B. Johnson dollars in 2015, the closing design of the program year and the August 18 release that wrapped the four-coin succession behind Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy. The 3.5 million figure ties Eisenhower for the lowest 2015 Denver output and runs well below the 5.18 million struck for Kennedy, the year's headline draw. Distribution moved through Mint product channels under the Not Intended For Circulation policy in force since December 13, 2011, so 2015-D Johnson dollars reached collectors in 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, and the annual Mint Set rather than through Federal Reserve shipments. Michael Gaudioso engraved the obverse portrait of the 36th president, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse used across every Presidential Dollar business strike.
Strike quality on the 2015-D Johnson reads consistently sharp, helped by the smaller print run and relatively fresh dies on a fourth-quarter design. First softening tends to show on the high points of Johnson's hair sweep and on the lapel of his suit jacket; the inscription "36TH PRESIDENT" comes up cleanly on early-state strikes. The manganese-brass cladding tones quickly to honey, olive, or rose within a year or two, and a coin a decade past issue that still shows bright lemon-yellow surfaces almost certainly indicates dipping. Edge-lettering errors remain possible because the third lettering strike sits outside the obverse-and-reverse press, but verified missing-edge 2015-D pieces are scarce, and any raw claim needs careful inspection because the lettering can wear off through ordinary handling.
For collectors, the 2015-D Johnson sits in the lower NIFC tier alongside the same-year Eisenhower at the 3.5 million print level. Population reports show ample supply at MS66 and MS67, the typical ceiling for satin-finish dollars pulled from Mint-wrapped rolls, and the realistic acquisition path is either an original 25-coin roll for a few dollars over face or an inexpensive certified MS67 from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service. The strongest collecting argument for the date sits in series context as the closing design of 2015 and a tier-low NIFC Denver issue. For the December 2011 NIFC cutover and the program's wider distribution shift, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
