About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 4,900,000 Dwight D. Eisenhower dollars in 2015, the second design of the year and the largest Philadelphia output of the four 2015 presidents. The release date was April 13, 2015, between Harry S. Truman on February 5 and John F. Kennedy on June 18, with Lyndon B. Johnson closing the year on August 18. Across both circulation mints, the 2015 Eisenhower business-strike total reached 8.4 million pieces, all of it collector-channel only under the Not Intended For Circulation policy that took effect in January 2012. Michael Gaudioso engraved the obverse portrait of the 34th president, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse used on every Presidential Dollar business strike and proof.

Strike quality on the 2015-P Eisenhower runs cleaner than the 2007 through 2011 high-mintage issues because Philadelphia kept dies fresh through the lower NIFC-era production windows. The high points to check are the temple, the ear, and the inscription "DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER" along the upper rim, and the Statue of Liberty's torch flame on the reverse, which routinely came up softer on early-program coins struck on harder, work-cooled dies. Watch the alloy as well: manganese-brass tones aggressively to honey, olive, or rose within a year or two of striking, and bright lemon-yellow surfaces on a coin a decade after issue almost always indicate cleaning or dipping. Bag and roll handling are the dominant grade-limiters at MS66 and MS67, and contact marks across Eisenhower's broad cheek and forehead set the 70-versus-69 ceiling.

The 2015-P Eisenhower sold to collectors only, packaged in 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, and the annual Mint Set. The 4.9 million Philadelphia figure is healthy by NIFC standards but small set against the 163.68 million Denver Washington that opened the program in 2007, and it tracks the broader collector-base contraction the series saw across its post-2011 run. The date is a routine fill for year-set and NIFC subset builders; original Mint-wrapped rolls and certified MS67 examples are the standard acquisition paths and trade at modest premiums over face value. For program-wide context on the 2012 NIFC cutover and the four-president-per-year release rhythm, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
