About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 4,900,000 Harry S. Truman dollars in 2015, the opening design of the year and the second-largest of the four 2015 Philadelphia print runs after Kennedy (Truman 4.90M, Eisenhower 4.06M, Kennedy 6.16M, Johnson 3.92M). Released February 5, 2015, Truman led the program's fourth NIFC year, struck for collector products only and never released into general circulation. The 4.9 million Philadelphia figure sits well above the 3.5 million Denver counterpart, an unusually wide P-over-D split for the late NIFC stretch. Don Everhart designed and sculpted both sides of the dollar, the only 2015 design with both faces credited to a single Mint sculptor. The P mintmark sits on the edge alongside the date, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination, applied in a third strike after the obverse and reverse dies impress the faces.

Strike quality on the 2015-P Truman is consistent across the run because the modest NIFC mintage kept die wear in check; the high points of the hair, the temple piece of the eyeglasses, and the lapel work typically come up well-defined, and the Statue of Liberty's torch flame and crown spikes survive the strike cleanly. The alloy tones aggressively, and any 2015-P presented as bright golden-yellow today should raise a cleaning flag. The dominant grade-limiter at MS66 and MS67 is roll-handling contact: cheek hits and field marks transferred from neighboring coins inside Mint-wrapped 25-coin rolls account for most of the population pressure between MS67 and the rare MS68.

The 2015-P Truman sold only through Mint collector channels: 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, the annual Mint Set, and the year's Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Set. Original Mint-wrapped P rolls and certified MS67 examples remain the standard acquisition paths for collectors building a year-set or an NIFC-era subset, and the date trades for modest premiums over face value at the upper grades. Truman's portrait would return on the 2015-P Reverse Proof from that summer's Coin and Chronicles Set, the inverted-finish counterpart to this circulation strike.
