San Francisco struck 1,373,569 proof Franklin D. Roosevelt dollars in 2014, the fourth and final design in the four-coin 2014 Presidential Dollar Proof Set released alongside the August 28 launch of the circulation strikes. The figure sits inside the typical 2013 through 2014 proof band and reflects the steady demand collectors maintained for the multi-year set as the program moved deeper into its NIFC stretch. Roosevelt's appearance on the dollar produced an unusual modern-coinage situation: he has occupied the obverse of the U.S. dime since 1946, and the Presidential Dollar gave specialists a second active circulating obverse to compare against John R. Sinnock's nearly seventy-year-old dime portrait. Joseph Menna designed the obverse portrait, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse used across every Presidential Dollar proof through 2016.
The 2014-S has the deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices typical of late-program San Francisco proof production: a strong cameo contrast, the pronounced texture difference between the reflective background and the satin finish on Roosevelt's portrait, the Statue of Liberty, and the lettering. Strike is sharp on the central obverse, where the high-relief portrait would soften first on a worn die. The S mintmark sits on the edge alongside the legends E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, applied in a third strike after the proof dies impress the faces. The obverse legend reads "FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT / 32ND PRESIDENT / 1933-1945", the longest single tenure in American history.
The 2014-S Roosevelt proof is essentially never sold as a single. The standard acquisition path is the original four-coin 2014 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, the four-design entry in the year's Silver Proof Set, or the comprehensive 2014 United States Mint Proof Set. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, populate Proof 69 Deep Cameo and Proof 70 Deep Cameo populations heavily, and modern proofs in those grades trade at small premiums above raw set prices. Roosevelt is the only president elected to four terms, capped retroactively by the Twenty-Second Amendment in 1951. For broader program context, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
