About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 5,040,000 Gerald R. Ford dollars in 2016, released March 8 between the February 3 Nixon launch and the July 1 Reagan launch under the Not Intended For Circulation policy in force since December 13, 2011. Ford holds the second 2016 spot by presidential succession as the 38th president; Carter, who succeeded Ford as the 39th, was still living and therefore omitted under the program's prohibition on living former presidents. With Carter skipped, 2016 ran three issues rather than four and closed the regular Presidential Dollar program. Phebe Hemphill designed and sculpted the obverse portrait, modeled on a 1975 White House photograph by David Hume Kennerly, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse on every business-strike Presidential Dollar.

The P mintmark sits on the edge alongside the date and the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, applied as a third strike after the obverse and reverse press. Strike quality on the modest 2016 Philadelphia run is generally clean, with first softening typically appearing on the high points of Ford's hair and on Liberty's torch flame. Edge-error collecting centers on that third lettering strike, where missing-edge, doubled-edge, and weak-edge pieces all surface in original 2016 rolls at lower verified rates than the 2007 Washington plain-edge variety. A genuine missing-edge 2016-P Ford slabbed by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, or NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, commands a meaningful premium; raw claims need careful inspection because edge lettering can wear off in handling without indicating a true Mint error.

The 2016-P Ford reaches the market through 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, the annual Mint Set, and the 2016 Presidential $1 Uncirculated Set, the same channels that distributed every NIFC dollar from 2012 forward. Population data shows broad MS66 and MS67 supply from satin-finish rolls, and an inexpensive certified MS67 is the realistic registry-set choice. Original Mint-wrapped rolls trade only marginally above face value and remain the efficient acquisition path. The strongest collecting argument here is structural: the next-to-last regular Philadelphia Presidential Dollar before Reagan closes the program.
