Philadelphia produced 6,300,000 Ronald Reagan dollars in 2016, the highest 2016 Philadelphia figure of the three designs and one of the larger individual-design Philadelphia totals of the entire 2012-2016 NIFC stretch. The Reagan dollar launched July 5, 2016, the third and final 2016 issue behind Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. The 6.30 million Philadelphia figure outpaces the 2016-P Nixon and 2016-P Ford (5,460,000 each) by 840,000 coins, the same Reagan-driven uplift visible on the Denver side and a useful index of how much extra the Reagan name carried within an otherwise fixed quarterly production schedule. Phebe Hemphill engraved the obverse portrait of the 40th president, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse used across every Presidential Dollar business strike.
Strike quality on the 2016-P Reagan benefits from late-program die management and the smaller print run versus the 2007-2011 business issues. Look for sharp definition on the cheekbone, the temple, and the inscription "40TH PRESIDENT" on early-state examples; the reverse torch flame and the pleating of Liberty's robes are the second-tier indicators when grading high. The manganese-brass alloy tones to honey, olive, or rose within a year or two of striking, and lemon-yellow surfaces a decade after issue almost always indicate cleaning. Roll-handling marks dominate the grade ceiling at MS66 and MS67.
The 2016-P Reagan sold to collectors only, packaged in 25-coin rolls, 250-coin boxes, and the annual Mint Set. Reagan would have been the final issue of the original Presidential Dollar program; the next eligible president in succession, Jimmy Carter, was still living and disqualified by the two-year-deceased rule, so the program paused in 2016 and resumed only for the 2020 George H.W. Bush issue after Bush died in December 2018. The program-closing position pushed both Philadelphia and Denver Reagan figures well above the 2016 mean and made the date the strongest-selling NIFC issue of the run. Original Mint-wrapped rolls and certified MS67 examples remain the standard acquisition paths for year-set and NIFC-era subset builders, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC accounting for the bulk of the slabbed market. For program-wide context on the NIFC cutover and the four-per-year release pattern, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
