About this coinHistory

Denver struck 1,400,000 George H.W. Bush dollars in 2020, a single-design year that reopened the Presidential Dollar program four years after the planned 2016 close. Congress had skipped Bush in the original 2007-2016 run because the Presidential $1 Coin Act required a two-year posthumous waiting period and Bush was still living when production wound down. His death on November 30, 2018 triggered the issue, released February 6, 2020 as the only Presidential Dollar of the year and the final coin of the entire program. Joel Iskowitz designed the obverse and Phebe Hemphill sculpted it, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse common to every business-strike Presidential Dollar. The 1.4 million Denver figure is the second-lowest circulation-mint mintage of the entire 40-design series, behind only the 2020 Philadelphia coin's 1,260,000.

The 2020-D Bush never entered general circulation. Distribution ran only through Mint collector products, primarily 25-coin rolls, 100-coin bags, and 250-coin boxes sold through the United States Mint's online channels, so any worn example traces back to a piece pulled from a Mint-wrapped roll and spent. Strike quality on Hemphill's Bush portrait runs sharp through the central devices, with first softening typically visible on the high points of Bush's hair, the eyebrow, and Liberty's torch arm. Edge-lettering completeness is the standard authentication check on any raw Presidential Dollar since the third lettering strike sits outside the press; verified missing-edge 2020-D Bush coins are scarce given the small print run and tightened final-year quality control.

For collectors, the 2020-D Bush sits at the bottom of the NIFC mintage band and carries genuine end-of-series interest as the final Denver Presidential Dollar. Population reports show solid supply at MS66 and MS67, the typical ceiling for satin-finish dollars pulled straight from a Mint-wrapped roll, and the realistic acquisition path is either an original 25-coin roll for a small premium over face or an inexpensive certified MS67. Pricing carries a modest premium over middle-NIFC Denver issues such as the 2014-D Harding because of the low mintage and the program-closing position. For the 2018 Bush death that triggered the 2020 release and the Presidential $1 Coin Act's posthumous rule, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
