About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 47,832 Ronald Reagan Reverse Proof dollars in 2016 for the Reagan Coin and Chronicles Set, the only Reverse Proof of the 2016 Presidential Dollar program and a sharp departure from the four 2015 Coin and Chronicles Sets that paired their Reverse Proofs with Philadelphia. The 2015 sets used 2015-P Reverse Proofs across Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson; the 2016 set switched the Reverse Proof to San Francisco, making 2016-S the only S-mint Reverse Proof of the program until the 2020-S George H.W. Bush issue closed the run. The set sold out at issue, with the 47,832 figure capped by the configured mintage limit rather than left to open demand. Phebe Hemphill engraved the obverse, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse.

The Reverse Proof finish inverts the conventional proof: mirrored fields and frosted devices become frosted fields and mirrored devices. On the 2016-S Reagan, the portrait, the lettering "RONALD REAGAN," "40TH PRESIDENT," and "1981-1989," and the Statue of Liberty reverse devices come up brilliantly mirrored against satin-frosted fields, a finish that demands close inspection because handling marks on the frosted field zones print harder than on conventional proof mirrors. Population reports at PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC show the issue grading heavily PR69 with PR70 the achievable but not automatic ceiling; field sensitivity, not strike quality, is the typical 70-versus-69 question.

The 2016-S Reagan Reverse Proof carries a Regular badge in the site catalog; rarity language for proofs lives in the prose rather than in the badge, per program convention. Three structural anchors set the date apart: the 47,832 mintage is among the lowest single Presidential Dollar proof figures of the entire program, the issue is the only 2016 Reverse Proof, and the San Francisco strike location makes it the lone S-mint Reverse Proof until the 2020-S Bush. The set itself paired the Reverse Proof dollar with a Reagan portrait silver medal and a printed historical insert, and intact original sets carry a packaging premium over loose certified examples. The Coin and Chronicles Sets are the natural acquisition path; PCGS and NGC PR69 examples are the most common slabbed format. For program-wide context on the Coin and Chronicles series and the program-closing 2016 issue, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
