About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,054,436 Sacagawea dollar proofs in 2006, the standard mirror-finish issue packaged in the year's Proof Set and Silver Proof Set. The figure runs slightly below the 3,344,679 posted for 2005 and continues a gentle decline in proof set sales that would carry through the rest of the decade. What separates 2006 in proof history is not this coin but the Satin Finish coin pairs from Philadelphia and Denver, which entered their second year inside the Uncirculated Mint Set; the 2006-S remains the standard cameo proof, distinct from those Satin pieces in both striking process and packaging origin. Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea obverse and Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s soaring eagle reverse hold the design through 2008.

Strike characteristics on the 2006-S are textbook for the era. Look for standard Cameo contrast (the visual effect of mirrored fields against frosted devices) on essentially every example, with Deep Cameo (DCAM) pieces, where the frost is heavy and the mirrors hit a black-glass quality, accounting for the bulk of the higher-graded population. Surface quality should be assessed under angled light: hairlines from improper handling are the most common deduction, since the manganese-brass alloy is softer than the silver and copper-nickel proofs collectors are accustomed to. Spotting (small dark dots that develop on improperly stored copper alloys) is the second condition issue and a hard one to fix once it sets in. Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company populations show plenty of PR69 DCAM material, with PR70 DCAM thinning rapidly enough to carry a real premium.

For collectors, the 2006-S proof is a Regular classification entry. A complete date-set proof Sacagawea collection through 2008 (before the program shifted to annually rotating reverses in 2009) takes nine coins, and the 2006-S is one of the easier ones to source. Original Mint Proof Sets and Silver Proof Sets remain the most efficient buying path; the certified PR69 DCAM market is liquid enough that paying up for a slab rarely makes sense at this date. For the program's launch context and the 2009 design transition to the Native American reverses, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
