About this coinHistory

Denver's 2007-D Satin Finish Sacagawea dollar came out of the U.S. Mint Uncirculated Mint Set at 895,628 pieces, the third year of the Satin program (introduced 2005, retired after 2010) and the year the legislation that would reshape the series moved through Congress. President Bush signed the Native American $1 Coin Act of 2007 (Public Law 110-82) in September, ending the Soaring Eagle reverse from 2009 forward, but the 2007-D Satin still carries Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s soaring eagle and Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea portrait without alteration. The Satin Finish is a separate striking process from both the standard 2007-D circulation strike and the 2007-S mirror proof: burnished planchets, specially prepared dies, slower press speed, and a matte sheen that neither of the other two finishes carries. The 895,628 figure matches the 2007-P Satin Finish exactly because the Mint paired Philadelphia and Denver one-for-one across Mint Set production.

The live authentication concern is misattribution between the three 2007-D-related products on collectors' shelves. The bag-quality 2007-D circulation strike (3,920,000 mintage) shows ordinary cartwheel luster and high-speed-press bag marks; the 2007-D Satin reads matte across both fields, with crisp device edges and no mirror activity. The 2007-S San Francisco proof, by contrast, carries mirrored fields with frosted devices and was never packaged in the Uncirculated Mint Set. Hairlines from improper handling drop the Satin grade quickly because the matte field shows every contact, and spotting (dark dots that develop on poorly stored brass-clad pieces) appears on a noticeable minority of long-held Mint Sets. Certified specimens carry an SP designation, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company label for finishes that are neither standard mint state nor mirror proof.

The 2007-D Satin Finish is a Regular classification piece. For type collectors building the 2005 through 2010 Mint Set Satin run, the 2007-D fits inside the middle of that program, with original sealed Uncirculated Mint Sets remaining the standard acquisition path. Certified SP69 examples trade modestly and SP70 carries the premium that reflects how narrow the grading window is on a matte coin. For the legislative shift behind the 2009 reverse rotation and the program's full arc, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
