About this coinHistory

The 2008-D Satin Finish closes the four-year Satin Finish program (2005 through 2008) for the Sacagawea dollar from Denver and is the last issue from this mint to carry Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s soaring eagle reverse. Mintage at 745,464 matches the 2008-P Satin exactly, since the U.S. Mint paired the two pieces one-for-one across the 2008 Uncirculated Mint Set. The figure is also the lowest of any Satin year for the Sacagawea, well under the 1,160,000 from 2005 and the 847,361 from 2006, tracking falling Mint Set sales as the original program neared its 2009 redesign. The Satin Finish is a distinct striking process from both the circulation strike and the cameo proof: burnished planchets, specially prepared dies, slower press speed, and a matte sheen that neither the bag-quality 2008-D nor the mirror 2008-S proof resembles.

Authentication is a surface call. A circulation-strike 2008-D shows ordinary cartwheel luster from high-speed presses with bag marks typical of brass-clad dollars; the Satin Finish reads matte across both fields with crisp device edges and no mirror activity. Mistaking one for the other is the live concern, since prices and grades diverge between the two. Surface grading is narrow on a matte coin: hairlines from improper handling drop the grade visibly, and spotting (dark dots that develop on poorly stored brass-clad pieces) appears on a meaningful minority of long-stored Mint Sets. Certified specimens carry an SP designation (Specimen, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company label for finishes that are neither standard mint state nor mirror proof).

The 2008-D Satin Finish is a Regular classification piece, but its bookend status (last Satin from Denver and the final Sacagawea on the original reverse from this mint in any format) gives it real relevance for type-set builders working the 2005 through 2008 Satin run. Acquisition through original sealed Uncirculated Mint Sets remains the standard path. Certified SP69 examples trade modestly and SP70 carries a premium that reflects how narrow the grading window is on a matte coin. The Satin Finish was discontinued after 2010. For the 2009 transition to annually rotating Native American reverses, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
