Philadelphia's 2008-P Satin Finish closes the four-year Satin Finish program (2005 through 2008) for the Sacagawea dollar from this mint and is the last Philadelphia entry to carry Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s soaring eagle reverse. Mintage at 745,464 matches the 2008-D Satin exactly, since the U.S. Mint paired the two pieces one-for-one across the 2008 Uncirculated Mint Set. The figure is also the lowest of any Satin year: 2005 came in at 1,160,000 each, 2006 at 847,361, and 2007 at 895,628, with the 2008 step down reflecting falling Mint Set subscriptions as the original Soaring Eagle program approached its end. The 2009 redesign moved the reverse to annually rotating Native American themes and shifted date and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" to the edge, so the 2008-P Satin is also the last smooth-edge Satin Finish in this denomination.
Authentication begins and ends at the surface. A circulation-strike 2008-P shows ordinary cartwheel luster from high-speed presses with bag marks typical of brass-clad dollars; the Satin reads matte across both fields with crisp device edges and no mirror activity. Mistaking the two is the live concern, since pricing and grading diverge. The Satin Finish uses burnished planchets and specially prepared dies, run at slower press speed for the matte sheen the regular 2008-P does not carry. Surface grading is narrow on a matte coin: hairlines from handling drop the grade visibly, and spotting (dark dots that develop on poorly stored brass-clad pieces) appears on a meaningful minority of long-stored Mint Sets. Certified specimens carry an SP designation (Specimen), the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company label for finishes that are neither standard mint state nor mirror proof.
The 2008-P Satin Finish is a Regular classification piece, but its position as the final Satin from Philadelphia and the last Sacagawea on the original reverse from this mint gives it real significance for type-set builders working the 2005 through 2008 Satin run. Original sealed Uncirculated Mint Sets remain the standard acquisition path. Certified SP69 examples trade modestly; SP70 carries a premium that reflects how narrow the grading window is on a matte coin. The Satin Finish was discontinued after 2010. For the 2009 transition to annually rotating Native American reverses, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
