About this coinHistory

The 2016-S Enhanced Finish Code Talkers dollar was struck at San Francisco for the 2016 American $1 Coin and Currency Set, the third year the U.S. Mint paired a special-finish Sacagawea with a $1 Federal Reserve Note in a single packaged product (after the 2014-D Native Hospitality and 2015-W Mohawk Iron Workers issues). Total mintage settled at 47,119, between the 2014-D Native Hospitality Enhanced (18,313) and the 2015-W Mohawk Iron Workers Enhanced (90,023, the high-water year for the format). The Enhanced Finish is laser-applied selectively to chosen design elements, producing brighter polished areas against a satin background, distinct from the proof's mirror-and-frost finish. The reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. and sculpted by Renata Gordon, depicts two soldier helmets (Brodie WWI on the left, M1 WWII on the right) with two eagle feathers crossing behind to form a V and the inscriptions CODE TALKERS, WORLD WAR I, and WORLD WAR II.

Authentication on Enhanced Finish issues is straightforward when the coin remains in its original Mint packaging: the Coin and Currency Set certificate of authenticity, the printed serial-numbered $1 note, and the slabbed or carded coin together establish chain-of-custody. Pulled-and-certified examples carry the Enhanced Finish strike-type designation on Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company labels and routinely grade SP69 or SP70 (Specimen, the certification grade applied to non-proof, non-circulation special finishes). Surface concerns are mostly limited to milk-spotting on the polished areas if the coin has been handled raw or stored in non-archival sleeves; the satin fields are less prone to handling marks than a full mirrored proof field but still benefit from minimal touch.

Despite its 47,119 mintage being meaningfully scarcer than the 1.2-million-piece regular 2016-S proof, this entry resets to Regular classification per the site's policy that proof and special-finish entries do not carry Key/Semi/Variety badges; rarity context lives in the prose. The 2016 Coin and Currency Set sold out at the Mint shortly after release and trades on the secondary market at premiums driven by the package as a whole rather than by the coin alone. Buyers willing to break sets and submit raw coins for SP70 have found the registry-completion base steady. For the rotating-reverse program structure, the post-2011 NIFC transition, and the special-finish product line, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
