About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 1,205,075 cameo proof Sacagawea dollars in 2016, the eighth proof of the rotating Native American reverse program and a slight uptick from 2015's 1,180,681. The coin shipped in the standard United States Mint Proof Set, the Silver Proof Set, and the dedicated Native American $1 Coin Proof Set. The reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. and sculpted by Renata Gordon, depicts two soldier helmets, the Brodie of World War I and the M1 of World War II, with two eagle feathers crossing behind them to form a V, anchored by the inscriptions CODE TALKERS, WORLD WAR I, and WORLD WAR II. The design honors the Choctaw of the 36th Infantry Division who coded tactical traffic during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October 1918, and the Navajo Marines whose unbroken code carried Pacific battlefield messages from 1942 forward, Iwo Jima included. Glenna Goodacre's Sacagawea portrait remains on the obverse, with edge lettering placing date, S mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Strike characteristics on the 2016-S follow the pattern proof collectors expect from the post-2011 program. Cameo (the contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices) appears on essentially every certified example, and Deep Cameo (DCAM, where the frost is dense enough to make the mirror fields read as black glass) carries the bulk of the higher-grade population. The helmet domes and the feather quills are the focal devices and frost cleanly when dies are fresh; late-die-state proofs show first softening on the helmet rims and central feather barbs. Hairlines from improper handling are the standard deduction since the manganese-brass alloy is softer than the silver and copper-nickel proofs more commonly handled, and small dark spotting on poorly stored brass-clad surfaces is the second condition issue worth checking before submission.

The 2016-S proof is a Regular classification entry. Original sealed Mint Proof Sets, Silver Proof Sets, and Native American $1 Coin Proof Sets carry the lowest premium over face plus packaging cost. Pulled and certified PR69 DCAM examples trade for modest sums, with PR70 DCAM the realistic upgrade target rather than a scarcity. The 1,205,075 figure does not stand out from the program's 2009-onward 1.2-1.7 million annual proof band. For the Native American $1 Coin Act of 2007 and the rotating-reverse program structure, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
