About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 2018 Jim Thorpe proof renders the Sac and Fox athlete in a finish that flatters the design's specific demands. Jim Thorpe (1887-1953) won the pentathlon and the decathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, the only athlete to have taken both at a single Games; played Major League Baseball from 1913 to 1919; played professional football from 1915 to 1928; and served as the first president of the American Professional Football Association in 1920, the league renamed the NFL the following year. The Associated Press voted him the greatest athlete of the first half of the twentieth century in 1950. Michael Gaudioso's reverse places Thorpe in football posture with the inscriptions JIM THORPE and WA-THO-HUK (Bright Path) framing the design. The proof finish carries the composition well: the mirrored fields throw the frosted figure into high relief, and the rim lettering reads sharply on a struck-twice planchet.

What collectors look for on this proof is the depth of the cameo contrast and the uniformity of the finish. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, is standard on modern San Francisco proofs, with Deep Cameo (PCGS) and Ultra Cameo (NGC) designations tracking the heaviest frost on the central jersey detail. PR69 and PR70 dominate certified populations because the coin shipped from the Mint inside sealed plastic capsules within the 2018 Proof Set and the various themed sets that included it. The 1,200,161 mintage covers all proof sets containing the Jim Thorpe dollar combined; identification is straightforward thanks to the dated edge lettering.

Inside the collecting landscape today, the 2018-S Proof is a common modern proof whose role is set completion rather than rarity acquisition. PR69 Deep Cameo examples trade in the low single digits and PR70 examples carry the typical perfect-grade premium, with population swings between PCGS and NGC accounting for most of the price spread. Collectors building a complete Native American Dollar proof run will pick this date up routinely from broken set inventory rather than at premium auction.
