About this coinHistory

San Francisco's 2018 Jim Thorpe Reverse Proof is the scarcest distribution channel for the Gaudioso reverse, struck for a special collector product rather than for the standard proof set. The Reverse Proof inverts the conventional finish: fields read frosted and devices mirrored, so the central football figure of Thorpe shows as a polished image set against a satiny background, and the rim inscriptions JIM THORPE and WA-THO-HUK (his Sac and Fox name, often translated as Bright Path) read bright against the textured surround. Jim Thorpe (1887-1953), a Sac and Fox athlete, won pentathlon and decathlon gold at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, played Major League Baseball from 1913 to 1919, played professional football from 1915 to 1928, and served as the first president of the American Professional Football Association in 1920. The 36,218 mintage is roughly 1.7 percent of either circulation-strike Mint's figure and a small fraction of the 1,200,161 standard 2018-S proof, making it the rarest distribution of the design by an order of magnitude.

What collectors look for on this issue is finish integrity rather than strike rarity. Reverse Proof presentation magnifies any handling: hairlines on the polished central design, breaks in the frosted field, or shipping marks along the rim all show plainly under angled light. PR69 and PR70 designations dominate certified populations because the coin shipped sealed within its original Mint product packaging, but PR70 carries a meaningful premium relative to the standard proof's PR70 because the certified pool is smaller. PCGS labels read PR (Reverse) or RP, NGC labels read PF Reverse, with both services applying full grade scales.

Inside the collecting landscape today, the 2018-S Reverse Proof is a low-mintage modern issue with niche but real demand from special-finish specialists building the post-2014 enhanced and reverse-proof Sacagawea family alongside set-completion collectors. PR70 Reverse Proof prices sit above standard 2018-S Proof PR70 figures, and PR69 trades in the mid to high two-figure range. The badge classification stays Regular despite the low mintage: rarity context for proof and reverse-proof issues lives in the narrative, not the catalog tier. For the post-2014 special-finish landscape, see the Sacagawea Dollar series history.
