About this coinHistory

The 1859-O Seated Liberty Dollar is the third New Orleans Seated Dollar issue at 360,000 pieces, the highest New Orleans Seated Dollar mintage of the series and the resumption of O-mint Seated Dollar coinage after a nine-year gap since the 1850-O. The 1859-O carries the standard Christian Gobrecht obverse and the No Motto reverse that defines the series through 1865, with the O mintmark positioned below the eagle on the reverse. Many 1859-O dollars remained in Treasury and Mint vaults rather than entering circulation, and were eventually released in significant quantities during the late-1850s and early-1860s redemption period.

Strike quality on the 1859-O is generally average for a New Orleans Seated Dollar issue, with some examples showing soft central definition typical of New Orleans Seated Dollar production. Liberty's head and the eagle's central feathers come up cleanly on most early-die-state coins. Most surviving 1859-O Seated Dollars grade VF to AU from circulation, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations clustering at VF and EF. Mint State examples are scarce above MS62 but available because of the documented bag-quantity releases from Treasury holdings; the 1859-O is one of the few Seated Dollars where Mint State examples surface with relative frequency.

The 1859-O is a regular common date for the New Orleans Seated Dollar subset and the most accessible O-mint Seated Dollar entry at mid-grade. Pricing trades at modest premiums above Philadelphia Seated Dollars of the same year at most grades. The 1859-O pairs with the 1846-O, 1850-O, and 1860-O as the complete four-year New Orleans Seated Dollar subset, with the 1859-O and 1860-O as the matched late-period O-mint pair before New Orleans Seated Dollar production ended. Authentication concerns center on cleaning, polishing, and rim damage from circulation; certified slabs from PCGS or NGC are the standard purchase route at higher grades.
