About this coinHistory

The 1859-S Seated Liberty Dollar is the inaugural San Francisco Seated Dollar issue with a 20,000-piece mintage, opening the S-mint Seated Dollar production that would continue intermittently through 1873. The 1859-S carries the standard Christian Gobrecht obverse and the No Motto reverse that defines the series through 1865, with the S mintmark positioned below the eagle on the reverse. San Francisco struck Seated Dollars in only seven years of the series (1859, 1860, 1872, 1873), making the S-mint Seated Dollar subset small and distinct within the broader series.

Strike quality on the 1859-S is generally average for a first-year branch-mint issue, with some examples showing soft central definition typical of San Francisco Seated Dollar production. Liberty's head and the eagle's central feathers come up cleanly on early-die-state coins. Most surviving 1859-S Seated Dollars grade VF to AU from circulation in the western states and Pacific commerce, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations clustering at VF and EF. Mint State examples are scarce above MS62 and genuinely rare at MS65 and above. The 20,000-piece original mintage produces a tight certified population.

The 1859-S is a Semi-Key issue for the San Francisco Seated Dollar subset and one of the most-collected first-year branch-mint Seated Dollars. Pricing trades at meaningful premiums above the Philadelphia 1859 issue at every grade, with the gap widening sharply at MS63 and above. The 1859-S pairs with the 1860-S and the later 1872-S and 1873-S as the small San Francisco Seated Dollar subset that documents intermittent S-mint Seated Dollar production. Authentication concerns center on cleaning, polishing, and rim damage in the raw market; certified slabs from PCGS or NGC are the standard purchase route at all grade levels. For the first-year San Francisco Seated Dollar history and the broader S-mint production context, see the Seated Liberty Dollar series history.
