The 1980-S is the second proof issue of the Susan B. Anthony program, with San Francisco striking 3,554,806 pieces. The Type 1 Filled S and Type 2 Clear S mintmark distinction that defined the 1979 proofs does not apply to the 1980-S; the punch problem that had produced the Filled S earlier in 1979 was corrected for the full 1980 proof program, and 1980 proofs use a single sharp S mintmark across the run. Frank Gasparro's obverse and reverse remained unchanged, and the proof was distributed in the standard six-piece annual proof set alongside the Lincoln cent through Kennedy half dollar.
For collectors, the 1980-S is a Cameo and Deep Cameo proof, with Cameo describing the contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices typical of San Francisco proof work in this era. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations concentrate at PR69 Deep Cameo, with PR70 Deep Cameo populations meaningful but smaller. Strike quality is consistently sharp; tail-feather detail on the eagle and the lunar surface texture on the reverse come up cleanly, and the eleven-sided inner border on the obverse shows full definition. The most common deductions for 1980-S Cameo examples are milky toning or fingerprints from cracked-out raw coins rather than strike or die-state issues.
This is a regular-issue proof, common in the absolute and easy to acquire in PR69 Deep Cameo at modest premiums above the modern proof floor. The collecting interest sits in the second-year context: by 1980 the Treasury already understood that the Susan B. Anthony dollar was failing in circulation, and the proof program continued only because the legal authority to produce the coin remained in force. The 1980-S commonly anchors the second slot in a year-by-year proof set. For the program history and the design-failure backstory, see the Susan B. Anthony Dollar series history.
