About this coinHistory

The 1981-S Type 1 is the standard proof variety of the final year of the original Susan B. Anthony program, with San Francisco's combined 1981 proof mintage of 4,063,083 split between the Type 1 Round S and the late-year Type 2 Flat S punches. The Type 1 accounts for the great majority of the total. The mintmark style on Type 1 carries the same rounded, full-serif character used across the 1981 San Francisco proof program for cents through halves; this is the punch San Francisco had been running since the 1979 Type 2 transition, and the dollar inherited it without modification. Frank Gasparro's obverse and reverse remained unchanged from the 1979 launch.

For collectors, the 1981-S Type 1 is a Cameo and Deep Cameo proof readily available at modest premiums, with Cameo describing the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices that defines well-struck San Francisco proof work. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster at PR69 Deep Cameo with meaningful PR70 Deep Cameo certifications. Strike quality is consistently sharp, eagle and lunar detail full, and the most common deductions are milky toning or contact marks on cracked-out raw examples rather than die-state issues. The Type 1 punch's rounded character is best seen at five to ten power magnification when comparing against a confirmed Type 2 example.

This is a regular-issue proof and the default 1981 San Francisco entry, distributed through the standard annual proof set. The collecting interest sits primarily in the contrast with the scarce Type 2 variety and in the date's status as the final original-program proof before the eighteen-year hiatus that ended with the 1999 revival. Raw 1981-S Type 1 proofs trade at small premiums over face; certified PR69 Deep Cameo examples remain inexpensive. For the production-halt context and the longer program arc, see the Susan B. Anthony Dollar series history.
