About this coinHistory

The 1808/7 half eagle is an overdate variety, meaning the final digit "8" in the date was punched over an underlying "7" left behind from a die originally prepared for 1807 production. Early in the year, when the Philadelphia Mint shifted from coining 1807 half eagles to 1808s, at least one working die still bore the older date. Rather than discard a perfectly serviceable die, a Mint engraver reworked it by punching a fresh 8 directly on top of the 7. The result is a coin that carries traces of both dates in the same spot. Bass and Dannreuther catalog the variety as BD-1 in their reference on early U.S. gold die marriages, and the overdate represents one of several ways the early Mint stretched its limited tooling.

Authenticating this variety begins at the date. Under a 5x or 10x loupe, look for the curved tail of the underlying 7 protruding from the lower loop of the 8. The diagnostic is most visible on coins in Fine or better preservation, where wear has not yet smoothed the date area. Beyond the variety attribution, basic specifications must also confirm a genuine half eagle: weight should fall near 8.75 grams, diameter should measure roughly 25.0 millimeters, and the alloy should be 91.67 percent gold balanced with copper and silver. The edge is reeded, and the obverse-to-reverse rotation runs coin-style at 180 degrees. Any deviation in weight outside a narrow tolerance, or a 7 that appears tooled rather than struck, suggests a problem coin worth a second opinion.

Collecting interest in the 1808/7 has always run higher than its parent date. The variety shares the umbrella mintage of 55,578 coins struck for all 1808 dies, but published survival estimates from Bass-Dannreuther and major auction archives suggest only roughly 100 to 200 examples of the overdate exist across all grades. That puts it firmly in early-gold territory, where buyers compete with type collectors, John Reich Capped Bust specialists, and die-marriage students. Problem-free examples in mid-grade circulated condition appear at major Heritage and Stack's Bowers sales periodically, and well-struck pieces with clear overdate detail draw strong premiums.
