About this coinHistory

The 1809/8 holds a quiet but important place in the Capped Bust Half Eagle series because it is the only 1809 dated half eagle that exists. There is no "normal" 1809 to compare it against. Every coin produced for the year carries the overdate, the result of the Mint reusing a leftover 1808 die rather than discarding good steel. An engraver punched a 9 directly over the existing 8, leaving traces of the original digit visible inside the curves of the new one. Bass and Dannreuther catalog this as BD-1, the sole die marriage of the year, with a reported mintage of 33,875 pieces struck at Philadelphia. The coin marks the third year of John Reich's Capped Bust Left design and is one of the more challenging early dates due to the heavy melting that consumed most pre-1820 gold from American commerce.

Authentication centers on the date itself. Look closely at the second digit and you should see the upper loop and serif of the underlying 8 peeking through the lower curve of the 9, most clearly under angled lighting at five to ten power magnification. Genuine pieces weigh 8.75 grams and measure approximately 25.0 millimeters in diameter, struck in 0.9167 fine gold with a copper and silver alloy and finished with a reeded edge. Because all 1809 half eagles share the same overdate die pairing, any coin showing a clean 9 with no trace of an 8 underneath is either a misattribution or a fake. Edge reeding should be sharp and evenly spaced, and the weight tolerance is tight enough that a digital scale catches most cast counterfeits before any other test is needed.

For modern collectors the 1809/8 sits in a sweet spot of being historically significant without being unobtainable. Mid-grade circulated examples in Fine through Very Fine appear at major auctions several times a year, and Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins surface less often but remain within reach for advanced collectors. Mint State survivors are genuinely rare and bring strong premiums, particularly anything choice or better. Original surfaces, honest wear, and clean fields matter far more than the headline grade on the holder. Read the full Capped Bust Half Eagle series history.
