About this coinHistory

The 1797/5 Large Eagle Half Eagle is one of the great die-reuse curiosities of the early federal gold series. By the time engravers were preparing 1797 obverses the Mint was still operating on a shoestring. Hand-cut working dies were laborious to produce and frequently in short supply, so when a usable 1795-dated obverse came out of storage, the engraver repunched a 7 directly over the existing 5 rather than start fresh. That salvaged obverse was married to one of the new Heraldic Eagle reverses, the design that would become standard from 1798 onward and which derives from the Great Seal of the United States with shield, arrow bundle, olive branch, and E PLURIBUS UNUM banner. The result documents two transitions: an undertype date repurposed across years, and an early appearance of the heraldic reverse that would displace the small naturalistic eagle of the first half eagles.

Authentication on this variety rests on two anchors. First, the date: under five to ten power magnification, the curved lower loop of the underlying 5 should remain visible inside or behind the punched 7, with the exact remnant pattern depending on die state and strike pressure. Polished or faded examples may show only a trace, while higher-grade survivors display the overdate clearly. Second, the reverse: Heraldic Eagle attribution must be confirmed against the parallel-issue 1797 Small Eagle pieces, since the wrong reverse identification reassigns the coin to a different variety entirely. Specifications follow the 1792 Coinage Act standard, 8.75 grams of 22 karat gold (0.9167 fine), about 25 millimeters across, reeded edge, coin alignment. Surviving population is small enough that named pedigrees through Bass, Eliasberg, Pittman, or Pogue meaningfully affect market value.

For modern collectors this sits at the upper rarity tier of the Draped Bust half eagle series. Bass-Dannreuther estimates roughly thirty to fifty pieces across all grades, with some references quoting lower figures still. The displayed mintage of 3,609 is the year-combined umbrella for every 1797 half eagle variety across both reverses and star configurations, and the 7/5 Large Eagle subset is only a small slice. Auction appearances are notable events at the major firms, and PCGS and NGC populations list only a handful of certified examples, mostly well-circulated through low Mint State.
